Karl Gerber Los Angeles History

In this 1948 edition Marian Otis and her husband Harry Chandler (mixed up by the blue blood as Harrison, her father) lived at 2330 Hillhurst in Los Feliz. The address no longer exists. In the 1950s it was subdivided and numerous homes were built on the former Chandler property.

The original name of Reseda was Marian. She was Otis’ daughter and Chandler’s wife. In 1913 Harry Chandler was merely the business manager of the Los Angeles Times which was owned by Otis. When he Harry Chandler died in 1944 he may have been the richest Californian. His name being listed at all in the Blue Book, in 1948, was misnomer number 2 because he no longer lived at 2330 Hillhurst.

Harry Chandler’s money came from a multitude of industries besides the Syndicate that formed the San Fernando Valley, being publisher of the Los Angeles Times from 1917-1941, and it being impossible for any Republican to win office without his approval. Harry Chandler is beyond the scope of this post, but suffice it to say it is unclear what Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley would have been without him, his newspaper, or his marriage to Marian.
